Leadership
Leadership Lecture Series (LLS)
My LeADERS Leadership Experience was participating in the Leadership Lecture Series (LLS) and receiving the Certificate of Leadership by participating in four sessions during the Spring 2023 semester. The sessions I participated in were:
-
Emotional Intelligence
-
The New Face of Leadership
-
Financial Literacy I
-
Financial Literacy II
The purpose of these sessions is to offer leadership-focused programs that build on leadership skills. I lacked flexibility in my schedule to incorporate a course to meet the Leadership requirement, so the LLS provided a more convenient opportunity to build on my leadership skills throughout the semester. Having the opportunity to listen to experts on the subjects presented in these sessions was also valuable as I was able to hear their opinions and be reassured about misconceptions I had on the topics.
My favorite sessions were the Emotional Intelligence session and The New Face of Leadership session. While I did find the Financial Literacy sessions interesting, they were not as related to my future profession as these sessions. In the Emotional Intelligence session, I reflected on how different emotional competencies were active in my life and how they related to my profession. Some of the emotional competencies included self-awareness, assertiveness, empathy, and happiness. I was surprised by some of my answers when I was forced to sit and think about some of these competencies. It was ironically a great exercise in self-awareness that helped me learn more about myself. My thoughts on these competencies as related to my profession can be seen in an answer to the post-assessment survey for this session.

The New Face in Leadership session was important in reminding me that leadership is developed through connections, specifically networking with others in the field. I feel this was something I had to learn throughout college and this course assisted in my transition to be more intentional about making connections with people in my industry. Overall, I think reflecting on my leadership abilities and my emotional intelligence is important to better myself as an educator. Being a teacher is being a leader to the students I teach, so knowing current leadership strategies can be useful in leading my students to success. Teaching can also be an emotionally demanding profession, so being aware of my emotional intelligence allows me to better practice self-care and ensure I am at my best so I can be the best for my students.
